A (Semi-Profitable) Parody of the Maker Movement

A Post-Structural Online Shopping Experience

The ‘Hot Topic’ oven mitts were "an homage to hearty and engaging conversation."

03 "Each mitt offers a topic that can serve as a conversation starter; you take it from there."

Like many of my favorite projects, Flotsam General Store started out as a joke and became something much sillier. In partnership with two comedians, I helped turn this parody of the esoteric maker movement into a full-fledged online store and self-funding start-up enterprise.

This was harder to do back in 2015.

Pre-selling only $40 "Mystery Sacks" full of items that we had "hand made by machines in America," promising to ship in "6-8 weeks or more," and generating interest among the comedy and "maker" communities alike, we quickly sold out of the 1,000 first-edition bags.

As "co-curator" I handled the operations of this very silly enterprise, going from concept to product development to shipping within a three month time-frame.

Flotsam got picked up by Brokelyn, AV Club, Put This On, Splitsider, New York Observer, and more.
