Making Fun of the Planet Earth
The Onion's Atlas of the Planet Earth
The Onion's second all-original book was comically large in scope: a satirical Atlas of the Planet Earth. With a unique comedic synopsis of each sovereign nation– and promising a "Free Globe Inside"– the book became a New York Times best-seller.
As Editorial Manager of the project, I coordinated the two-year production process from initial concept through publication. As a creative challenge, it meant exhaustively researching the unique history and culture of each nation...in order to figure out how to make fun of each country accurately!
I managed the research and multiple drafts of the book, even as countries insisted on fighting for their independence during our writing process (I'm looking at you, Montenegro). And I'm proud to say that I wrote a handful of countries in the book.
"Possibly the funniest book ever written."
